The sun was beaming down and people were out in force at this months treacle market in Macclesfield, Cheshire. We started the day with a flavoursome pork and quail egg pie from All About Pies whilst listening to a 5 piece bluegrass band play out across the crowds. It wasn’t long before we bumped into Jane Munro, the Co-founder of the Treacle Market. She said “I moved to Macclesfield back in 2008 and was surprised to see the traditional cobbled streets in the centre not being used to their full potential, so in 2010 we put on an arts festival showcasing local culture and events, the festival transformed the market place and we knew then the traditional market needed to be brought back to life.”
Jane and her Co-Founder Debbie Quinn look to maintain a great selection of hand made, hand produced local stalls all offering a plethora of goods, with no two stalls exactly the same. “It was important to create a market that people would want to spend time at and be able to purchase goods that couldn’t be easily bought on the high street.”
In just 5 years the monthly market has gone from 6 to over 150 stalls boasting high quality goods and products covering the arts, antiques, crafts, food and drink, all starting in the cobbled central square overlooked by the church and moving out to the surrounding roads. As well as a great selection of stalls there is also is real sense of community, whilst we were talking to Jane 4 or 5 people stopped to say hello and catch up with her, we also spoke to many stall holders who talked passionately about what they were selling and producing. A lot of these chats ended up with us buying some goods, from fresh sour dough baked just 100 yards away at "Flour, Water, Salt" - to 80% Cacoa chocolate from "Pure origin" produced in Cheshire, plus a few other delights in between.
There is something simple and satisfying about a conversation with the person you are buying goods off, and a market such as this allows that human interaction in a way that larger shops and chains could never do. Combine that with a friendly atmosphere, a location full of character and it is easy to see why Macclesfield market is thriving and why people come back time and time again.
The Treacle Market is the last Sunday of every month and is located on Macclesfield Market Place, Butter Market & streets around from 10.00am – 3.00pm. You can follow on Twitter @treaclemarket
