I have piles of sketch books, some full, others waiting to be filled. These are the ones I’m carrying around at the minute. I use them for playing around in, jotting down ideas, scribbling notes, doodling diagrams, and working my through problems and projects. You can take away my laptop, but I couldn’t work without a sketchbook. (Or two, or three…)
I draw more than I type so I always have a pen to hand. This is a fistful are my favourites, including a Pentel Sign pen, a Noodler’s Ahab Flex (with yellow ink), a Uniball Eye Micro, and a Tombow Fudenosuke.
When I drowned my phone last year I became acutely aware of how reliant on it I am. The things I missed most were my calendar, my to-do lists and the camera. I also depend on it for listening to music, radio and podcasts.
Bose SoundLink Mini II & Earphones
I use both of these with my phone. I’ve been impressed with the sound and power from the Bose Bluetooth speaker, and less impressed with the tangles I always end up in with my Apple earpods.

I’m always wearing sunglasses, even in the weakest rays of sunshine. Partly because I have old eyes, and partly because it makes me feel like I’m on holiday. I haven’t managed to break or scratch these pairs just yet. The brown pair (my fly fishing glasses) are Smith Optics with polarised glass lenses. The green pair (my driving glasses) are Oakley Holbrooks.

Whatever you’re smoking or burning you can light it with a zippo.
Elliot Brown Watch
Designed locally, my Elliot Brown Canford is awesome. It has a clean and classic design yet it’s solid and adventure proof. The metal strap has a simple adjustment so you can wear it over a wetsuit. It takes harsh knocks, salt water and sand in it’s stride. The attention to detail is fabulous, the customer service is exceptional. Give them a call and have a chat with Ian and Alex.

Local pub loyalty card
My local pub is just 2 minutes walk from my house. It’s a fabulous place. It’s much more than good beer. It’s a place of fun, friendship and community with a good helping of tradition and randomness thrown in. It’s a place I really miss if I stay away too long.
I can’t imagine not having my VW T4 van. I converted it into a camper myself years ago and it’s been on countless kayaking, surfing and camping adventures. It’s a car, it’s a toy shed on wheels, it’s a comfy bed for the night, and it’s perfect for parking on a cliff top for a brew with a view.
When I’m not in the office, or in the river, I’ll have kicked off my foot prisons and be wearing flip flops.
I have several Patagonia jackets, perhaps more than I strictly need. I love them all. They’re well made, warm, comfortable and hard wearing. This one’s just come back from being repaired, for free. I’m a big fan of the way Patagonia approach sustainability, environmental issues and social responsibility.

I like whisky, I love Ardbeg. It’s smokey and sweet and smooth. I love the taste, I love the smell, I love the branding. The distillery on Islay is a magical place and the hospitality of the locals is second to none. This bottle is a standard 10 year old, but it’s quite rare in my collection – it’s unopened!

Simms G3 waders
My idea of heaven is standing in a crystal clear stream with a fly rod in my hand. I’m a super keen fly fisherman. It’s hard to describe why I love it so much. Trout don’t live in ugly places, but it’s more than that. It’s about being quiet, slow, and peaceful. It’s about constantly thinking, observing, adapting, and solving problems. It’s soothing, grounding, soulful, and at times exhilarating. These waders are the best bit of fishing kit I’ve ever bought. They’re expensive but worth every penny. This pair is battered, worn, torn and repaired. I’ve a brand new replacement pair waiting in the wings but I can’t bring myself to swap them over just yet.
